Though losing weight is highly recommended, it is equally important that you lose it in a healthy manner. Many extreme diets that promise weight loss may put you at a risk of certain serious health problems.

Let’s take a look at some risks associated with these types of diets:

Creates Risk of Malnutrition

Extreme diets raise your risk of malnutrition. While certain diets require you to reduce your calorie intake to extreme levels, some of them advocate eating a particular type of food. It is a well-known fact that our body requires a variety of nutrients from different sources to fulfill its requirements. However, going on an extreme diet may rob your body off the essential nutrients, leaving you malnourished.

Slows Down the Metabolic Rate

You lose weight temporarily through extreme diets and they can also slow down your metabolic rate. Therefore, once you stop following the diet, you are at risk of gaining back the weight you lost, owing to your slow metabolism.

Weakens the Immune System

Since your body is not getting the kind of nutritional and caloric intake it requires, your immune system may weaken. As your immune system weakens, it fails to protect your body from infections, germs and other threats.

Fatigue

Your body needs energy to carry out its functions and food provides it with the energy it needs. However, when you are denying your body of the nutrition and food it requires to carry out its functions, you may experience fatigue, which is a sign that your body is facing malnutrition.

Dehydration

The water you drink is not the only source of hydration for your body, as your body also obtains hydration from breaking down food.  On an extreme diet, chances are you are not consuming adequate food and other liquids that in turn may cause dehydration. Since all the organs of your body need hydration, dehydration may pose a threat to the health of your organs.

Eating Disorders

Extreme diets can also increase your risk of falling victim to eating disorders. Eating disorders are not only painful but can even result in death in extreme cases. It is, therefore, important to stay on the alert for any possible signs of eating disorders.

Heart Health

Heart health is another area that is at risk from extreme diets. Since these diets may rob you of essential nutrition, dehydrate you and weaken your immune system, they put strain on your heart health. In some cases, this may result in a heart attack.

Therefore, it is important that you lose weight in a healthy manner that does not pose any kind of risk to your body, put it under pressure, or compromise its health and efficiency.
