By now, you have probably heard quite a bit about the benefits of fasting, such as intermittent fasting, which is more accessible for most people. But, did you know that fasting might help improve your skin, in addition to helping you shrink your waistline? Check out the information below to learn more.

Here’s What Happens When You Fast

What exactly happens when you stop eating for a while to go on a fast? Well, when the body doesn’t have carbs that are easy to burn off for energy, it needs to search for other sources of energy. There is a process that is referred to as gluconeogenesis, and during that process, the body is able to get glucose via non-carb sources. An example of those sources is amino acids.

Fasting Has the Potential to Provide Other Benefits

According to Medical News Today, studies with animals have shown that fasting might help improve health in more ways than just helping with weight loss. For example, studies showed that restricting calories in combination with fasting might even help increase lifespan.

During fasting, there is an increase in three metabolites known as isoleucine, leucine, and ophthalmic acid. As you get older, the amount of the metabolites will decrease, but you can undo some of that damage by fasting and increasing their numbers as a result. Overall, these changes to the body help produce anti-aging effects, which can include an improvement in the health and appearance of your skin all over your body.

Although more research into the effects of fasting is expected, you can start reaping the benefits that have already become apparent. Intermittent fasting is a good place to start if you have never fasted before but be sure to do your research so that you do it correctly, without stressing the body in the process. You might just find that fasting helps improve your skin and the number on the scale.
