If you have a farmer’s market available to you weekly on even more frequently then consider yourself lucky.  This is one of the best ways to take on shopping to lose weight.

While just strolling through the marketplace isn’t going to make your extra fat magically disappear, the experience as a whole will make a considerable difference.

After all, shopping to lose weight is among the first steps in the process of eating right.  Consider the way you feel when you head into a farmer’s market.  You’re getting some fresh air and you’re talking to the people who actually grow the food and are therefore the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable about it.  At the same time that you fill up on vitamin D from the sun, you’re also reducing your carbon footprint and boosting your nutrition.

You’re not going to find produce much fresher than a farmer’s market.  When you buy local produce on the day it was picked (or even the day after), you’ll guarantee your body the highest possible nutrient density in your fruits and veggies.  At the same time, you’ll feel proud that while you’re shopping to lose weight, you’re also supporting your local economy.

The key to making sure you’re getting the most out of this experience is to give yourself time.  Don’t think of a farmer’s market in the same way you think of a grocery store.  The point isn’t to leave. The point is to shop!  Yes, there are likely some stalls selling freshly baked cookies and pies, but those should be visited exceptionally sparingly.  That said, getting one (small!) treat per week won’t hurt anything as long as you control yourself the rest of the time.

Try to focus on freshly grown whole foods – fruits, vegetables, herbs, bulbs, eggs and even whole grain bread if you’re lucky enough to have that option, too.  Talk to the people who have grown the produce.  Ask them about their favorite preparations.  You might come across a very simple and tasty recipe or combination you’d never considered.  Don’t forget to talk to the farmers about how they recommend storing the veggies.  You may discover that you can get a much longer life from your purchases if you tweak the way you’re keeping them.

Let the passion the growers have for their foods infect you, too!  Choosing fruits and vegetables from a farmer’s market can help to make you interested in exactly the foods you should be eating more often.
