Obesity is a growing epidemic worldwide. It affects both physical and mental health. It not only lowers self-esteem but there are many chronic diseases associated with abnormal weight gain.

People who are obese have a lower quality of life and often isolate themselves socially. Here, we will share with you some obesity complications you can easily avoid by losing weight. Getting rid of these complications will help your body perform optimally and will enhance your productivity, both in your personal and professional life:

Stroke

Obesity is the root cause of stroke in overweight people. Obesity can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries and cause them to burst due to blood clotting. This blood clot can hamper the flow of oxygen to your brain and can lead to stroke. The risk of stroke is directly proportional to Body Mass Index. Therefore, obesity complications also increase with weight gain.

Type-2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to manage the elevated blood glucose levels. This incompetency of the pancreas leads to insulin resistance and thus, type-2 diabetes. Diabetes is a leading cause of amputation, kidney, heart, lung diseases and blindness. It is the biggest of all obesity complications.

A majority of obese people have diabetes. They gain weight due to overeating high-fat and high-calorie foods. Since the body has to work extra hard to produce enough insulin initially, it stops producing it to metabolize these simple carbohydrates into energy. Hence, obese people develop diabetes, which deteriorates their health condition.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea leads to irregular breathing and causes snoring at night. Obese people have excess fat around their neck. This constricts their air pathways and makes it hard from them to breathe. Sleep apnea, in some cases, may also prove fatal.

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and other diseases. Obese people may be prescribed medication to control their bad cholesterol levels, to keep their blood pressure normal or to stabilize their blood glucose levels. All these medicines have side effects, which can poorly affect their memory or their liver health. Obesity is a vicious circle, in which all the diseases are associated with each other. You will end up contracting one unless you shed the excess fat for good.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a joint and muscle problem. The muscle, ligaments and joints can only bear a certain amount of weight. If excess weight is exerted on them, it can result in herniated discs and osteoarthritis. So, these are some of the obesity complications you can avoid by losing weight.
