If you break it down, it’s simply amazing how many reasons for big appetites exist. Sure, some of us may just feel as if we’re more prone to eat. We may feel that, growing up, we were conditioned to eat more and that it was a good thing. So when we are forced to face portion control in the way your body needs, it can be quite shocking. Though you may think that a big appetite is a matter of control, there may be a legitimate medical reason for it. So getting to know your body and listening to its cues can offer insight and therefore help you to work through a big appetite as a recurring problem in your health.

So yes, if we look at the true reasons for big appetites, they may be a matter of conditioning or learned behavior. It may be that you have to change your view of proper portions or that you have to work to retrain your brain as to what you really need. It may very well be that you have to educate yourself on what makes up a proper portion, and then you can become more well-versed at making healthy choices.

Pregnancy also happens to be a big reason for an increased appetite. You are eating for two and working hard to create this other human being, and with that may come an insatiable hunger.

Constant Hunger May Be An Indicator of Underlying Issues

There may be medical reasons for big appetites of which we aren’t even aware, though. One such reason that is often overlooked is low blood sugar. You may feel hungry but not know why. Anytime your blood sugar or hormone levels are out of whack, it may impact your appetite and eating overall. This is worth testing for, as is diabetes. Again, if your body isn’t working properly or your hormone levels are off, you will feel it in this way. You may even find that your depression or thyroid issues can cause you to feel hungry often and to overeat as well.

If something is amiss in your body, then it may contribute to hunger and represent one of the reasons for big appetites. It may be that you are working out more and therefore burning more calories. In kids, it may be a growth spurt while for adults it may be an indication that something isn’t working properly. If the increased appetite gets worse or if you find that nothing is satisfying you, then you want to have this condition looked at. Though it may be a simple matter of retraining your brain, it may also be part of a bigger health problem. Always listen to your body and be aware if something seems amiss.
