Everyone has his or her own unique body shape.  This can make it difficult to know whether or not you are maintaining a healthy body weight.  A doctor can help guide you, but there are also a number of symptoms that can suggest that your weight is hurting your health.

It’s important to be aware of these types of symptoms.  While some may be more obvious, others can be quite subtle.  Unless you’re paying attention to your own body, you may not realize your weight is hurting your health. Some of the discomforts of the symptoms can come on subtly and gradually enough that you don’t recognize them for what they are.

The following is a list of symptoms that could mean your weight is hurting your health.  Remember that this is not a complete list.  There are many other symptoms, as well. These represent some of the more common ones. Keep in mind that these symptoms can indicate other underlying problems, too, not just weight.

You don’t sleep very well – weight can cause any number of changes within your body.  It can increase cortisol (stress hormone) levels, which can lead to insomnia among other problems.  Extra weight can also cause added pain to your joints which can make it more difficult for you to sleep restfully for several hours without being woken by the pain.  If you have consistently broken or short sleeps, this may be a symptom.

You have an “apple” shape – there are two main shape categories of people who are overweight or obese.  These are sometimes called “apples” and “pears.” People who are apple-shaped carry their weight around their middles – the belly and waist.  People who are pear shaped carry their weight on their hips, thighs and buttocks.  Research has shown that people with an apple shape are at a higher risk of heart disease than those with a pear shape.  Moreover, that risk increases with added weight.  The bigger the “apple,” the bigger the risk.

You’re easily tired or fatigued – regardless of whether or not you had a good night of sleep, if you find regular tasks tire you out easily, this could be an indication that your weight isn’t doing you any favors.  If other people around you are completing tasks without getting winded, but you feel like you need to have a rest, you might want to speak with your doctor.  It could be an indicator of a weight problem, a vitamin deficiency, a thyroid issue or many other factors such as eating processed foods, drinking alcohol or smoking. It’s best to know the reason behind your exhaustion.

You snore – snoring can be a warning sign that you either have or are developing sleep apnea. This is a condition that cause your airway to become obstructed as you sleep.  It places you at increased risk of pulmonary hypertension and possible heart failure.  People with added weight are at a higher risk of sleep apnea.
